on the wan it is set as "Static IP" in the router.

yes. watching the logs, nothing shows up in the outgoing table.

 in the status page for the router the WAN IP address becomes 0.0.0.0

i can ping the router (gateway)  from inside but can't get beyond the
router to ping the WAN default gateway (speakeasy).
