When you say you loose the external static IP, what exactly happens? Are

in the status page for the router the WAN IP address becomes 0.0.0.0

Sounds like the NAT box is trying to perform a translation it can't handle, and it freaks out and blows away its own configuration.

It does say linksys on it, anyways -- see if there's an updated firmware on their website; if so, give it a shot.

Also, make sure your wireless access point isn't doing double-NAT, that is, the WAP NATs your traffic, then the linksys box NATs your traffic again.

i can ping the router (gateway) from inside but can't get beyond the
router to ping the WAN default gateway (speakeasy).

sounds right -- with a 0.0.0.0 address it'll not be able to pass traffic any further.
