I would suspect a decent cable producer to test them before shipping. In a production environment it would cost next to nothing to test them and have obvious sales advantages. Andrew's comment "I *never* have that high a failure rate when I make the cables myself." certainly indicates that it is quite possible to make cables reliably. I have to wonder about Andrews choice of cable suppliers. Surely he has better things to do than make cables. In an analogous situation I note that in the 80's when hard disks in the tens to hundreds of megabytes became available I witnessed a friend of mine make about ten million dollars by the simple expedient of testing and burning in disks before shipping them. The company was Emerald Systems. The founder and CEO was Gunner Bolz. http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-8927989.html The sequel is classic. Gunner sold out, walking off with what was in the early 90's a substantial fortune. The VC's came in. Within a year the company had burned through the VC money and went broke. I may not have this quite right, but that is how I recall it. There may be others of you out there with experience since this was a San Diego company. I am curious if you have different recall.
