The fans they use in the inverters are pretty flimsy. I may go with one of the
metal inverters that are mountable.

Three weeks ago I took a trip with a friend who brought a 300W inverter

to power his laptop. It was originally from Radio Shack, and although
 it
had worked well for several years it blew the cigarette lighter fuse
 the
first time he plugged it in. He then bought another inverter at a
 K-Mart
along the way. After 5 minutes of the 300W inverter running his 100W or

so laptop it started to smell and was so hot you couldn't touch it. The

fan in the inverter wasn't running. Blowing air past it with the vents
on the dashboard of the truck cooled it off and it worked fine the rest

of the trip.

Quite a few years ago a friend bought a vise at Harbor Freight. While
grinding something he had clamped in the vise he accidentally hit the
vise with the grinder. Turned out a good part of the rather-sizable
 bulk
and shape of the vise was bondo. After he had ground off all the bondo
there was a rather puny, very rough looking piece of cast iron in the
middle.
