They want to be able to present entire threads of messages, so they need
the messages that you send as well (since they don't know if you're on a
mailing list that will get them back).

And, they do appear to eliminate duplicates, but only when the come in from
outside.  If you app IMAP-puts the message there it won't be eliminated.
