Heh, thanks for your input, but I've already taken the low road. The
possible outcomes would seem to be:

a) it might just actually work for my and my purposes. Either because of
a low-stress usage environment, or accidentally getting an item from the
 better-end tail of their quality distribution function.

b) it might cause a bunch of headaches, in which case I would throw it
away and be out $30 or so.

If I get problems, at least --because of several assessments like yours
-- at least I would know enough not to try very hard to make it work
