Just out of curiosity, is there a particular reason you want to rip and
encode with Amarok?

Only because I assumed (ah, assumption again) that that's what one does.

I can script up a nice CD ripper/mp3 translation/storage proggie now that
I know I'm not repeating something that was already there.

sorry, I never used Amarok to rip/encode. I like kaudiocreator because I
like to rip in FLAC or 320K mp3s (or both). KAC will also tag the files for
you and it seems to run pretty quick. But scripts work too. =] Have you
tried Amarok with your son's mp3 player yet? His Ipod? Does it work well?
One thing I love about Amarok is the ability to dump music and podcasts on
my Zen.

I have the duplicate problem as well. Too much music =]

Can tou make Amarok build a collection of only *.mp3 in a directory tree?
