sorry, I never used Amarok to rip/encode.  I like kaudiocreator because I
like to rip in FLAC or 320K mp3s (or both).  KAC will also tag the files for
you and it seems to run pretty quick.  But scripts work too. =]  Have you
tried Amarok with your son's mp3 player yet?  His Ipod?  Does it work well?
One thing I love about Amarok is the ability to dump music and podcasts on
my Zen.

I have the duplicate problem as well.  Too much music =]
