Funny you should mention that. Install Ubuntu 8.04 as a guest in VMware (I'm using Fusion right now). The new kernels break enough that the VMware guest kernel modules won't even compile.
With regards to your rants about VMware server-side products only being manageable via Windows clients, I feel your pain. We have a fledgling VMware Virtual Infrastructure installation at work, and I need to run a Windows VM on my desktop just to run the stupid management tools. I'm not sure if it's ironic or retarded (though I'm leaning towards ironically retarded.)
