the signal?
They wouldn't. How close are these planes that you are seeing? If you live
in La Mesa and look outside when you notice interference and happen to see
a plane in the air it is because there are always planes in the air over
La Mesa. Small planes carry VHF radios and each plane spends very little
time transmitting. As a pilot I can't conceive of how they would affect
your TV reception.
I never looked out and saw them. After several times getting
interference lasting about 30 seconds or so, I noticed that I heard a
small plane passing high overhead and recalled that it had happened like
that before. After that, I paid attention. And there was never a time
when I would get interference that long that I didn't hear a small plane
passing high overhead. I don't think I've ever noticed this phenomenon
at night.
Every time it happens, I start hearing the sound of the plane getting
softer and while it gets softer, reception clears up.
I just now heard one (at 2am). And I looked over and noticed very
slight distortions taking place. Then I heard the Doppler shift. About
10 to 15 seconds later, the distortions disappeared as the sound of the
plane continued getting softer. So far, it seems pretty consistent. In
the several minutes since then, I have seen virtually no distortions.
I guess I'll have to start looking up to see where the planes are when
the interference happens when they happen during the day.
Maybe it's just their physical presence. I remember radio stations
losing and gaining reception depending upon the locations of people in
the vicinity. (I don't remember if that was AM or FM.)
