the U-Verse fiber runs to the neighborhood server boxes. Think of it like this,
Your coax cable carries all frequencies/channels at one time and you tune one
to watch it. With the U-Verse setup, they put all channel data on the fiber and
then when you sign up, you get 3 tuners in the neighborhood server box which
you remotely control to pick your channels. Those channels get you your home
over copper wires but only those channels of video.

That's really interesting. And actually it's a really good technology choice. Swapping processing power for bandwidth is almost always a good call.
