*And* in my experience, many of those hugely familiar with C++ reject
trying to learn anything else, often because they worry it'll be just as
huge an effort to get good at (say) Tcl as it is to get good at C++.

I've met those people too. They get *emotionally upset* when you
suggest they learn another language like Python. "Oh my god, no! I
just got good at C++ finally! I'm not learning anything else."
