I have to wait for M$ to deign to fix the showstopping bug that I just ran into.

That's my big beef with proprietary vs. open source. If proprietary software would give me the source code, I would have a lot fewer issues.

You don't require redistribution rights?

Not always. Remember, I do VLSI design as well as software development.

The thing I build with software, in the end, is not always software.

Therefore, I only need to fix bugs in the service of shoving the chip out the door. I could care less about the software, in that case.

Would you assign your modifications back to the vendor?

Maybe, maybe not. Improving some algorithm can be quite valuable in VLSI design and I might want to hang onto that.

What parts of the "open source" license are important to you?

Depends upon whether I'm delivering hardware or software.
