Yum update will update your kernel, too.  You now have
a choice of which kernel to use with your linux
system.  They aren't independent - same system, just
choice of exact kernel to use.  

I suspect that eventually, you will upgrade some
component that requires the later kernels, and for
that item, won't be compatable with the earlier versions.
