It is a bout time I said something. Back when the -announce list was
made, or when it transitioned to mailman (i think made, to be honest) a
decision was made as to how to populate the subscribers. I took the list
of subscribers from *all* lists, and subscribed then to -announce. I
also removed duplicates, as best as I could (so those subscribed to
-list as [EMAIL PROTECTED] and -newbie as [EMAIL PROTECTED]
would only get one -announce mail)

It was also decided against automatically syncing up the lists. I agree
that -announce should be an opt-in list, only. What I do not know is if
we could subscribe -list and -newbie to -announce and prevent
duplicates. Is mailman that smart? It might be. I do not feel like
researching the issue, it does not interest me that much.
