I'm not averse to spending more than the minimum on the premise of
subjective or speculative benefits, but thought it would be nice to at
least ball-park the numbers.

If a minimum upgrade were to be merely a GB of ram and a couple of
commodity 100GB hard drives, then it surely wouldn't cost more than
about $400. If you were envisioning a mobo changeout, well, that is
something else, I guess -- but I was assuming that the ram+disk infusion
would get us by for a couple of years (an assumption worth poking at).

If we're talking about the difference between $400 and $2000, then I'd
kinda like to see the arguments that the minimum upgrade is inadequate,
or limiting wrt planned improvements requiring more horsepower, or
overlooks incipient problems elsewhere in the "one-horse-shay", or
unrealistic in some other way.

If it comes down to something like

..well, we might be spending $1000 more that we _could_ get by on,
but it makes me/us feel better, and it _might_ turn out wise if
worst-case reliability estimates hold for the old system, or
  greater demand/opportunity options materialize unexpectedly..

then I don't mind making that conscious decision. I just think I'd like
to estimate the cost of the decision I was making <grin>.
