Basic Med should have just followed the Light Sport rules. What's the difference between flying a 1320# airplane that flies 125 mph versus one that flies 175; just like flying a Cessna 140 and a Vans RV6? If you have a Private ticket and flying in Light Sport, there were only small restrictions on when/where you could fly; no night flight etc. We ALL self-certify before we fly, what's the difference? So we fly a faster, heavier airplane instead of one under 1320#; we're still flying in the same airspace with the same restrictions.
I can understand if someone hasn't been flying in the past that they should probably get a one time medical, but why penalize someone who's been safely flying for the past 10+ years without a medical that all of sudden needs one? Why not make everyone get a medical? What was the "magic number" of 10 for anyway? Why not 5 or 8? Did something all of a sudden happen in the past 5 or 2 years that disqualified me? Nothing changed.. All political garbage and trade off, again. Shame on our government for this garbage. Then the FAA issues even MORE restrictions when dealing with your private physician than going to get a 3rd class medical? Just another poke in the eye by the FAA who felt they were losing control! Okay, I quit. We can all probably agree that our government doesn't work for us. If "they" don't have "control", they aren't happy. If you desire a 3rd class medical and have never had one before you will have to get one, and then not ever have to get one again unless you require a special issuance.
