Mission and particulars: We’re stationed in WPB, Florida. I’m 5’10” at 220lbs, wife is 5’7” at 130 lbs. We would like: a cross country plane for 3 to 5 hour legs to the north east coast and as far west as NM; fast climb rate and cruise speed; relatively high altitude operation; IFR; BRS; retractable, tail dragger or fixed tri gear is fine; able to utilize a certified fuel injection engine; decent glide ratio; hard to spin and correctable if happens, gentle positive dynamic stability and a winning lottery ticket, please. 😜

Hi Orson,

I was in the same place you are about twenty years ago. I was all about the KR and my mission profile was very similar to yours. I kept pulling and tugging at the KR design trying to make it conform to my mission profile; even helped to get a new airfoil designed for it, When Dr. Mole suggested I look at the BX-2 Cherry I thought that was the answer but it still didn't quite fit my mission profile. I kept looking. I ended up building a Van's RV-7A. When it first flew in 2009 it had a very basic 4 steam gauge panel and a hand held GPS. Today, after nine years of upgrades, it is fully IFR equipped and truly a go somewhere airplane. There is a reason that there are 10,000 RV's flying. A very close second in my search for a plane to fit my mission profile was the Thorp T-18. If your mission profile stays close to what it is; do your self a favor and track down an RV and a Thorp and get a ride in them.

If you can massage your mission profile somewhat then by all means build a KR but if you really are looking for an IFR go somewhere airplane then give the Thorp's and RV's a look.
