The only problem I had with that was when the customer had a bunch of speed
dials programmed into the fax machine. The ksu pick up dialing was not fast
enough to beat the speed dialing.

One such customer went ahead and re-programmed all the speeddials with 9p.

To get around having to dial a 9 before every fax number, configure the
extension that the fax machine is connected to with "Pickup Dialing":

On a TD1232 digital system...

To store a number to dial automatically when the extension goes off-hook:
- Pickup the telephone handset of the fax machine
- Dial 742 9 #
- Hang-up the telephone handset

In the above example "9" is the number being stored. You could also use
"82", for example, if you're grouping COs.

To set/enable call pickup:
- Pickup the telephone handset of the fax machine
- Dial 741
- Hang-up the telephone handset

To cancel/disable call pickup:
- Pickup the telephone handset of the fax machine
- Dial 740 (Dial REALLY FAST before the system has a chance to start
autodialing.)
- Hang-up the telephone handset

We've been using Pickup Dialing on our fax machine's extension for years.
We haven't had to teach a single employee to dial 9 first. Its been great.

CONS:
*You have to dial a 9 pause before every number (some clients have
trouble accepting this).
*It uses an extension port that can be used for a phone, fax-detection
is useless on a system no utilizing Auto-attendant.
*You can use DIL, but then this takes up an incoming co line.
*Some faxes are actually used as a natural PFT device for emergency.
*And last but not least Panasonic does not make a Proprietary fax
machine!!

If you run it through the system, the system "knows" about it and it's
usage. For example, here it is used as a secondary outgoing line. If
it's in use, it won't be used for that and instead another line will
be substituted. As an incoming line, we have it programmed to go
directly to one extension - the fax machine - so it won't bother
anyone else.

I don't know of any advantages of placing it ahead of the system as
then the system will not know of it's state and attempting to use it
while it is in use will ruin incoming/outgoing faxes.
