I thought of making a L4D2 campaign, but as others have pointed out it
is a LOT of work. There just isn't a whole lot of bang for the time
invested in it. I've made a dozen of so HL1/OP4 maps, and I've modified
a lot of the stock hl1/op4 maps as well, but those in comparison are
quick and easy. Alas, real life has made a lot of commitments for my
time, and carrying a campaign from start to finish is a lot of time I
just don't have....
I'm not sure how Valve could streamline the campaign creation process. I
could think of some ideas, but I'm not sure Valve is motivated to
actually do anything about it.
Having said all of that, if they released an SDK for L4D3 tomorrow I'd
be one of the first ones to download it and start working with
it.....maybe real life can wait a bit....

If L4D3 happens, I'm going to be making maps for it for sure.
The problem is that L4D2 is barely getting any attention any more. That
plus the fact that the L4D2 playerbase is not very receptive for custom
maps. I don't think L4D3 will change that a lot, but fuck it, I just want
to enjoy making stuff in the L4D3 engine :-)

If L4D3 happens, I'd be all about getting back into it. In the mean time,
I've been working in UnrealEngine... which is an interesting departure from
BSP-centric mapping since UE4 relies very heavily on meshes over BSP
brushes. And I've been working on a 2D fighting game using MonoGame and a
copy of Monocle (Towerfall's engine).
It's enough to keep me occupied until Valve decides it wants to do L4D3. I
really don't know if it intends to do so or not. It's pretty obvious that
they're doing just fine financially not continuing Half-Life or L4D3.
DoTA2 seems to be doing pretty well... and the same with their
distribution service. I wouldn't completely discount L4D3 not being made,
however, considering that: 1) Valve isn't a public company, and can do
whatever it damn well pleases, and 2) They've re-invested efforts into
Counter-strike (of all games), so never say never.

I am sure when L4D3 comes around this list will fire back up. Should be

Thanks for all the links, Jesse. So many knowledgeable people on this
list (myself not included). Sucks there's not much going on here
anymore.
I guess I'll just have to wait, indefinitely, to see if this list gets
revived sometime around L4D's reincarnation.
On a related note, when I played L4D2 the other day, I tried to join a
map
(urban flight?) that appeared in the list of VS games. Now this was a
first for me... Highlighting the map entry in the list there on the
right -
iirc, the download link was*steam* something. Clicking that link
immediately started downloading it in-game with a nbs snazzy
black/white
progress bar in the bottom-right, without taking me to some site. All
without having to restart the game the map was playable...supposedly.
Unfortunately, when it finished dling no one was playing the map
anymore,
of course... It was seamless, reminding me of the old quake days. A
great
(-ly expected) feature way too late. 'tis a pity.

Don't think so, most people just post on the forums though.

This is almost the exact discussion I was in when Alien Swarm
was
released and people didn't play custom campaigns. Then without
valve
updates they stopped playing it all together. It's difficult to
get a
good
team of players and ones that know the maps and even harder to
get
them
to
play that long. That's why people stick to stock campaigns
-everyone
knows
the maps.
