Hey there Group!!

I been rather quiet but thought I would share what I have learned so
far. In my opinion testing your breeding stock is very important. I am
in that process right now. For my male and female, I had their
Pennhips done, prelim OFA and prelim elbows done. We did this all at once
so my pups only had to be under the sedation once. Total cost to me $970
for both of them, plus over an hours drive away to the closest Pennhip
vet. I had them tested for Von Willebrands Disease at $99 each, which I
did through a group clinic otherwise it is $141 each. This I could do at
home with swabs and mail in. I had both tested for their color genes at
$85 each. While not a health condition it does tell me what I can expect
in my puppy litters so I can be better informed when starting my waiting
list. If I am not expecting any chocolates then I can tell a customer
that before they sit on my waiting list or make a deposit. Though I am
expecting a rainbow litter as I carry all the color genes :)

I'm not done, I still have CERF, thyroid, and a couple others. My
estimate was $1000-$1200 per dog, which is what I came up with prior to
deciding to breed. Of course there are other start up costs too. :)

I think it is all worth it!! My plan is to breed not just excellent
companion pets but Service and Therapy dogs too. For me testing was very
important, there is nothing more sad than to spend a year into training a
dog and find out it has bad hips :(

You make a 15+ year commitment when you decide to get a puppy so of course
you want to make sure and be picky about the pup you select. Some people
are fine with a back yard puppy or a shelter puppy while others need the
security of selecting a breeder they have confidence in! This is a
commitment of the heart so you make it from the heart :)

I am learning lots and I have lots more to learn, but I have learned that I
am absolutely loving it all! :)
