Hi Lisa!
I'm new to the groups as well. we brought home our new Labradoodle,
Farley, last week. We have been researching this breed for almost three
years, since the first time my husband heard about them. I've wanted a dog
since we've been together (16 years) and he's always been against them.
His first wife had dogs, and he just hated them, although he grew up with dogs
and never had a problem with them outside, he hated them in the house.
Then about 5 years ago my allergies went nuts and I went though allergy testing
and found out I was mildly allergic to dogs (as well as about 40 other things,
my dr says I'm the "most allergic" patient he has) Anyway, that put another nail
in the dog coffin so to speak! then Gary heard about Labradoodles and
we started researching. About a year ago we decided we were ready for a
dog but then we sold our house and moved so it got put off again. I
finally got to put a deposit down on a puppy this spring.
I am Farley's main caretaker and I have had NO allergy symptoms from
him!! I've also purposely worn black and dark color shirts (he's cream and
light apricot) to test if she sheds and there is absolutely NONE! Now,
granted we've only had him less than a week, and he is a puppy, so we're dealing
with potty training and the usual puppy chewing, but he is very mellow.
Our vet said she has never met such a mellow puppy. He doesn't bark unless
he is playing and gets wound up. My husband is even jealous because Farley
likes me more than him, LOL!
I read as much as I could on the dogs, went to every breeder site I could
find on the internet, and spoke to many via e-mail or on the phone. We
knew we wanted an Australian multi-gen Labradoodle to have the best chance with
my allergies, and I didn't want to have to ship the puppy, so I was only looking
at breeders within about a 6 hour drive (except for the ones in Texas because we
own a factory down there and my husband makes frequent trips down). We
also wanted to get the puppy during the warmer months to make potty training
easier and because the boys (ages 8 and 10) would be home from school so the dog
could get used to them right away. So all of this narrowed down the
breeders for us, and then the first litter we had a deposit on only produced one
puppy. We were devastated to say the least. That puppy was supposed
to come home the beginning of August. I was heartsick that I was going to
have to start the process over again to find another litter and wait
again. I contacted several of the breeders I had been in contact with to
see when they would next have multi-gen litters and found one of them had
puppies that were available right away because it had been a litter of 11 and
she hadn't taken that many deposits. So with some whining on my part, my
husband agreed to moving the puppy up rather than back!
