I enjoyed seeing the stars when the street lights
were off during the recent blackout. In defence of the
street lights though, one of the neighborhood children
was almost hit by a transport truck that didn't see the
child in the dark.
Our front and back porch lights are on a light sensor
so that they stay on all night. A high power "street light"
was installed at the back of our house because the dark
common area was beginning to be used by drug dealers. Now
that they can be seen, they don't come around any more.
Many businesses are well lit all night because nothing
that isn't nailed down would be there in the morning, if it
wasn't. Offices are constantly being broken into for their
computer equipment. In fact, places are often hit several
times because the equipment is always being replaced and
therefore always new.
Lights are less expensive than alarm systems and guards
and just as effective.
