And now "they" don't recommend strings - at least not the kind that run from one mitten to the other through the coat, because of the danger of strangulation. We sometimes used the commercial "mitten clips" - two grips of the sort used for suspenders connected by a short piece of wide elastic. Or sometimes I made a short string of the same yarn as the mitten (crocheted) and used a safety pin to connect it to the coat sleeve.
