Hi Patricia,
I, too, expect to have to bite the bullet pretty soon and replace my pc,
which was top of the line 8 years ago but has begun to regularly throw out
fatal
errors and require constant rebooting. I know 8 years is longer than most
people keep a computer so I don't suppose it owes us anything. I am
considering
getting a laptop but I would like to be able to use mine away from home, for
instance while traveling to look up information about places we plan to visit,
make hotel bookings, etc. so the portability is something that may be more
important to me than to you. My sister, however, recently replaced her desktop
with a laptop because she enjoys being able to be in the room with her family
while on the computer instead of being restricted to another room in the house.
I would be interested in advice and recommendations regarding laptops.
As to the desirability of a combination machine, I have a Hewlett Packard
OfficeJet G55 Printer/Flatbed Scanner/Copier and it has served us very well in
these 8 years and is still going strong (knock wood..(-:). I especially like
using it to reduce or enlarge lace patterns as it will reduce up to 25% and
enlarge up to 400% and can be set at any point in that range. I also like the
flatbed scanner rather than a paperfed scanner. Among aother things, I have
used
the scanner to scan actual pieces of lace or non-digital snapshots into
emails. When we chose it, we had heard the same warnings about combo machines
as
well as admonitions to purchase a laser printer. I took some sample items to
copy at the store and compare the output of several machines and decided that
the output of this machine was as good as any of the others, some of which were
quite a bit more expensive. I'm sure there have been many improvements in
the intervening years, but the best thing to do is try them out and compare if
you have an outlet available where you can do that.

morning and looking forward to a week-long lace retreat!
