What wonderful information Mary, I understand exactly what you mean about the satin ribbon slipping on nylons, it makes perfect sense but I doubt if I would have thought about it. Thanks for that tip. I am doing this garter in secret so am not sure how I go about the elastic problem. Will work that one out. I will see her a couple of months before the wedding so I might split on the secret. Better safe than sorry. Because they live in Luton Bedfordshire, not far from the lace in the museum, I have picked a piece from their book, it is little horseshoe repeats. I don't find that one mind numbing, just sort of soothing, I sort of get into a rhythm with the working. The new piece I am doing at the same time is a horseshoe, someone kindly made up a new grid for me and I have drawn designs onto it and am working that one, for the second time, first time a trial (well turned out that way) the second one I am really happy with so far, so taking my time a bit. I haven't made up my mind whether to stick it to card or whether to add it to acetate.
Well I have to go out so am off to put my fur lined boots on.

Hi Bev and Sue,

I feel for you! I've made two garters already and have the lace for the
third finished but not made up.

The first two were for friends weddings and this last but not least to put
away for a grandchilds future wedding.

Sue, I too found making a casing of gross grain ribbon for next to the skin and satin ribbon behind the lace with elastic inserted between works best. The
gross grain ribbon doesn't slide on the skin ( or on nylons) as much as
satin. I also leave the elastic unjoined until I try the garter on the bride (this
allows for mistakes in measurements).

I have two more garters for grandkids to make and use this lace making at
demos and the pattern I use is rather a mindless lace.

Mary in SE Michigan where its cold again today after a lovely 50 degrees
yesterday.
