Funny....I asked this very question when I was in Germany last December. There was a confection called "schneeballen" (snowballs) which is popular in Rothenburg and recommended to us by our German tour director. I asked about the pronunciation since I too had thought it was as Clay indicated, but was told no, it is "schnee" (rhymes with "see" in English). My guess is that it is somewhere "in between"...??? I hate to mispronounce things.... ))-: Of course, I'm sure there must be regional differences in pronunciation in Germany just as there are in the US. (Ask people in various areas of the US to pronounce "oil"....you'll get "oyl", "all", "erl".....???)
