In my own thinking I tend to distinguish between things that are lacey/lacy, used as an adjective to describe things with holes (there's even lacy Swiss cheese) - and *lace* as a noun, meaning a fabric you make beginning with a strand of fiber from which you create patterns where openwork sections, i.e.holes, are necessary to the design.
