Before making other decisions, I would ask the head of the altar guild how they normally wash the altar cloth - expecially if it has wine (red?) or candle wax spilled on it, because this is what they will probably still want to do.Â
If the lace is going to be displayed on the front of the altar, I would consider attaching the lace to the front of separate fabric which is then laid under the linen cloth, rather than the linen cloth itself, as this may reduce the frequency of wahing.
