Some time ago I washed my #50 thread linen torchon project in the washing
machine on warm water in a bag. It was dried flat and pinned out a little
but not really stretched (it did not have picots). Best I recall, the
measurements were 26" x 6". I pre-measured and found that it shrunk 5% in
the long width. I'm assuming that it shrunk the same in the narrow
measurement.

So this may be some type of guide for torchon, linen size 50. I'm also
going to assume that other types of laces will have different proportions.

Subject: [lace] Church lace

I've finally gotten serious about the altar cloth for the chapel at church.
Actually took measurements today. I was planning on washing the linen cloth

in very hot water to shrink it before attaching the lace, but the the head
of the Altar Guild then asked about shrinking the lace. Which brings up the

whole issue of cleaning church linen with handmade lace. I'm planning on
using a pattern from the Svenska Spetstar
http://www.svenskaspetsar.se/sv/article/928/kors_langd or
http://tinyurl.com/brta54r I don't know if that makes a difference or not.
I'd rather not wash lace in hot water before giving it to the church, on the

other hand, you don't want things to shrink and thus be useless for the
purpose. On the other other hand, how does one clean church linen? Do I
make a sample, boil it, and see how much it has shrunk?

Someone out there in Arachneland must know. Please help.
