Devon If your alternate theory is correct it would account for why modern Italian bobbin laces are nearly all tape laces, and why Flanders developed Brussels and Duchesse. Of course, the alternate theory could have been invented precisely from looking at the modern dichotomy, and thinking it goes backwards in time to the 17th c.
Santina Levey also had a theory that the braids/plaits between the tapes crossed over completed parts in Milanese, but in Flemish tapes they always went BETWEEN tapes, and never crossed over behind the tapes. It would be nice to have a magic time machine to verify one or the other of these theories. But looking at the laces themselves, I don't see how we could prove it, or disprove it.
