Matt, Im developing an small app with Laszlo and Catalyst. For the communication between this two im using XMLRPC, there is a plugin for Catalst that make this a very simple process (perl-Catalyst-Plugin-XMLRPC).
I dont know if you can access DHTML as you need, im only work with the flash UI because is light to load than DHTML and is the only UI that supports XMLRPC or SOAP right now. If you need your app to comunicate with Web Services, you would need to run it with an application server like tomcat, this is proxy mode, because SOLO deployment dont work with web services.
