Hello Matt,

Firstly, you are correct that the documentation that you reference is obsolete. It predates OL4! I don't know how it remains on the openlaszlo.org site, but I have filed at JIRA task to have it taken down ASAP, as it's needlessly confusing. As the doc guy at openlaszlo, I apologize for your goose chase. Please see instead the most recent version of this chapter:

http://labs.openlaszlo.org/legals-nightly/docs/guide/architecture.html

Second, as of 4.0.2 the XML-RPC APIs now work in both DHTML and SWF runtimes in SOLO mode -- no LPS required.

Third, that Guestblox application is ancient and its code has not been updated in at least two years. It's probably not a good point of reference except in the very general sense. You are correct that the documentation is not especially helpful in explaining how to construct a RESTful OpenLaszlo application. We have been working on an example application with supporting documentation and hope to post it to OpenLaszlo.org very soon -- hopefully, before next week is out. I think this will go a long way towards answering your general questions.

Finally, there is some (very spare) documenation of the LPS server interface on the OpenLaszlo Wiki:

http://wiki.openlaszlo.org/LPS_server_API

Our goal is to (eventually) provide sufficient documentation such that interested third parties could implement the LPS in languages other than Java.

I hope this helps,

jrs

Thank you, especially Patricio and Geoff for your help.

Yes, my concern about functionality lacking in SOLO deployment mode. So now I can use XMLRPC/SOAP and get anything important directly from the SOLO binary without needing the LPS? Then I suppose this page is outdated.

Patricio do you think you might like to share your experience with Perl and OpenLaszlo? You (or I) could mention it on perlmonks.org. I have not been able to find a single example of Perl and OpenLaszlo yet, and a Catalyst example would be great.

I still don't really know what functionality is going to be missing if I use Catalyst plus a Flash binary. If you can point me to documentation on this I'd appreciate it. What I really want is a Catalyst version of the LPS I think! I just deployed a FastCGI/ Catalyst app that is quite satisfying.

I'll check out OpenLaszlo again. Thanks!

Sincerely,

Matt
