But as far as I know, stuff like file type detection and demultiplexing is still a job for the library around ffmpeg?

For multimedia playback, using gstreamer could be still an option. But last time I checked, Win32 support is still very basic, and as its interface is based on glib, support for in within FPC/Lazarus would be quite some work, as its much more complicated than using a library with a clean C only (without pseudo-OOP as in glib) interface.
