Don't ask me, I don't really know what I am doing.
All I can say is that I don't care about file types and, as far as I understand 
what demultiplexing is, I don't do it. And I am able to play mpeg, avi, mov and 
flv.

For multimedia playback, using gstreamer could be still an option.
GStreamer uses ffmpeg, too. :)

yes there are ffmpeg plugins, but GStreamer has its own codecs, too (although not as much).
