Below is the output from when I issue the commands on 10.6.2 on a volume
mounted with TrueCrypt.

# /usr/sbin/vsdbutil -a "/Volumes/testing 1"
# /usr/sbin/vsdbutil -c "/Volumes/testing 1"
Permissions on '/Volumes/testing 1' are enabled.
#

When you run those commands are there any messages being reported to "Console"
or in /var/logs/?

This will depend upon your backup configuration reporting settings.

Yes thanks. The bottom line is if someone else is trying to do this or
something similar, then I am sure any help/pointers/scripts you are able to
provide will be of great assistance.

Finally, please let me know if you have any success with an image mounted via
hdiutil.
