Is anybody working on support for hardware colorimeters like the
ColorVision Spyder? I looked around for the documentation required
to write a driver for it, but haven't found anything.
To my knowledge, the interface to the hardware ("Spyder") is not
publicly available.
Two years ago, I came across a newsletter on the ColorVision site
stating that OptiCal was going to be available under Linux.
In November 2003 I enquired about the Linux version, and here's the answer:

Below is our canned response for Linux questions. Only OptiCAL is
compliant with Linux.
We do have a version of the OptiCAL software available for Linux. The
distribution is built on Red Hat 7.3 as a Binary RPM. It is also tested
on Red Hat 8.0. Perhaps it will run on other Linux distributions but
that has not been tested by us.
OptiCAL for Linux does not support the Spyder colorimeter instrument.
The X-Rite DTP92 (RS232 serial) and the Minolta CA-100 (RS232 serial)
are supported.
The features and pricing of the Linux version are the same as for the
Mac and Windows version of OptiCAL. The Linux version is sold as
software-only.
OptiCAL for Linux does create ICC profiles that could be used by
ICC-aware applications on Linux but our existing Linux customers use
OptiCAL only for Calibration and not Profiling. I do not have any
information on support for ICC profiles in Linux applications.

We have been unable to get the Spyder to play nicely with the USB
support in Linux. I expect that the USB support in Linux will evolve as
future versions are released and we will continue to explore this issue.
