That's still not very much to go on. By "authenticating users" do you 
mean something like authenticated SMTP, where a user authenticates to 
the SMTP server before being allowed to send email? Or do you mean that
 
the server will be using LDAP to validate email addresses of incoming 
messages? Those are two very different things. Without solid
 information 
the only things anyone can give you are vague guesses.

No, but based on tests we've run (http://www.symas.com/benchmark.shtml)
 
I can tell you that you will need more expensive hardware to obtain the
 
same performance on FDS than you would with current versions of 
OpenLDAP. It's a matter of efficiency.
