That's still not very much to go on. By "authenticating users" do you
mean something like authenticated SMTP, where a user authenticates to
the SMTP server before being allowed to send email? Or do you mean that
the server will be using LDAP to validate email addresses of incoming
messages? Those are two very different things. Without solid information
the only things anyone can give you are vague guesses.
Have seen implementations with Fedora Directory Server?
No, but based on tests we've run (http://www.symas.com/benchmark.shtml)
I can tell you that you will need more expensive hardware to obtain the
same performance on FDS than you would with current versions of
OpenLDAP. It's a matter of efficiency.
I hope this helps...

Subject: Re: [ldap] Architecture recommended
Our experience here at Symas has been that OpenLDAP performs very well
on AMD-based servers. That said, you haven't provided very much
information about your performance expectations, object size, etc. About
all I can add is that you will probably need a 64-bit build of OpenLDAP
to provide reasonable performance with 1-2M entries.
Perhaps you could tell us more about your planned application?
Cheers,
