I disagree. We have been told by our leaders to do certain things to help protect our families from pornography. Elder Oaks stated several things in his last conference talk. How can we help provide tools to follow his council? It would be an interesting project to work on an open source filter/logger.

My daughter is not 2 yet, and though we plan on having more, she's the only one right now. I've thought about the idea of monitoring web usage, white/blacklisting, etc. I'm sorry if this comes across the wrong way, but I try to be plain-spoken when matters of privacy, security, and freedoms are concerned.

First, this sounds more like an advertisement for a piece of software. It has the "what I do" "what I can't do without it" and the testimonial. It's probably good for schools, libraries, businesses, etc., but our homes? The testimonial has a hole big enough to drive a truck through. I'm sorry, but if someone is going to leave their spouse for something as faceless as an on-line lover, there is something wrong with the husband-wife relationship. Spy software wouldn't prevent it, but would add fuel to the fire. That couple didn't need SpectorSoft, they needed a good talk with a counselor or their Bishop if they were LDS.

if you need to spy, or even put the software in place to do so, you are risking or possibly losing the trust of your spouse and your children. How can they trust you, and confide in you when you have made it patently clear that you don't trust them.

I have the tools necessary to safeguard my family. I have one computer, in the living room, connected to the 'net via wireless. I have a headless webserver in the hallway. If I wanted to, I could deny access to the internet for certain hours while keeping my website up, but why bother. In a few years time, when my daughter is old enough to do more than play on the cebeebies website, I won't restrict access. We will try to keep her innocent, but not naive. I have education. I have correct principles. I don't need some new-fangled gadget to keep my kids safe or my wife by my side.

Even more important than monitoring employees and/or co-workers, is to
monitor what your children are doing on the internet. I have used spy
software to monitor my home computer for several years. Each family
member knows everything is monitored. The idea is not to spy on them,
and when they know every screen shot and keyboard strike is recorded,
they govern themselves very well. I use a firewall to block websites
where music can be downloaded illegally, or chat rooms, etc.. The spy
software is called SpectorSoft, and I recommend it to anyone with
children, or a wife for that matter. A good friend of mine lost his
wife to an online romance. If you don't have a good program like
SpectorSoft, you simply don't have the tools to safeguard your family.
With SpectorSoft, every screen shot and keyboard strike is recorded.
You will know everyone's passwords, read every email, and see every
screen shot. What do you guys think?
