Declaration is an appropriate term. This is probably one of the
simplest copyright notice I've seen them
issue. I wouldn't be too upset by it. If you are really bothered by
their statement of the obvious, then
rewrite at least 30% of the routines and move on. I'd still give
original attribution, such as "portions,
Copyright 2006, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints". But,
until lawyers figure out how to
game the USPTO on methods and concepts (not likely, but they're
trying), it's still Title 17 territory
and the issue of fair use is in play.
One other comment. I would not attribute the paranoia by IRI to the
understanding or opinions of
people in the tech side of the Church. They are two different classes
of individuals, with two
completely different views on the matter; because of their knowledge
base, work product and
experience.

Pardon me if I'm out of line, but I couldn't help wondering why you
offered "C" code with such a scary sounding copyright declaration on
the Free Software dedicated LDSOSS list. Is there no cracking open of
doors or softening of hearts in the LDS leadership and staff toward GPL
type licensing? I'd like to fancy I wasn't the only FLOSS believer who
was left a bit speechless. There are of course, after all, very good
spiritual and moral reasons why many of us have chosen to stand behind
GPL-type software, and I'm not sure it's good to ignore the thought
that those values might be totally shut out in the church we are loyal
to.
I have only been on this list a few months, so I may be unaware of some
kind of "understanding" or "truce" that was previously made regarding
this concern. In any case, it would do my heart good to hear a little
about it or to be referred to the appropriate archive.
