Drupal and Joomla (which is what tech.lds.org) uses are both similar options.
The pros is that you have more control over what you can lock down and prevent
others from modifying. The cons are that they are more content management and
therefore act more like content management systems. In other words, they have
author, editor, and publisher roles which can at times get in the way when what
you are trying to do is open a site up for anyone to contribute and publish
immediately. I'm not as familiar with Drupal as with Joomla but if I were in
your shoes, I would look to see if there were any modules for MediaWiki that
would lock down content to the original author like you are desiring. If you
don't see anything, check out Drupal or Joomla and see if they have modules that
make it easy for people to author and publish their own work without a lot of
knowledge of how a CMS should work.

For example, if I wanted, I could create everyone in Joomla with publisher
rights but then they would be presented with more options about when and how
they want their content published. Unless they knew what they were doing, the
user would be somewhat confused because he just wants his content published now.
Maybe drupal already does this automatically but Joomla has a lot of options
you can tweak the content with.

I think you'll find that the open-source CMS Drupal (drupal.org) will do what
you want. Drupal, I think, is a much more flexible solution then MediaWiki. It
is very easy to set custom permissions so people can upload/edit only their
content. Also, as a very popular open-source project there's hundreds of
modules already written that extend the core functionality. Or if you need a
custom module (which I don't think you will), Drupal is very easy to extend.

I've used Drupal a fair bit so if you have more questions or would like help
setting something up with Drupal contact me off the list.

We recently launched a new site called Mormon Testimonies (http://
www.mormontestimonies.org/) where members can write or embed YouTube
videos of their testimonies. It runs on Mediawiki which seemed like a
good choice because it's relatively easy to use. On the other hand,
it's not THAT easy to use, and for testimonies, collaboration and a
history of revisions aren't important. We specifically don't want
anyone to edit anyone else's testimony. Should I look for or develop
a Mediawiki plugin to lock it down? Or I should switch to some other
software package that's more suited for this? (Everyone gets their
own page and that's it -- a bit like MySpace.)
