We wanted the best of both worlds. . . the control of a CMS and the openness
of a wiki. We wanted some sections or topics to be have restricted
privilieges
and some section to be wide open. Christopher Phillips gave the LDSoss group
good advice a couple of months ago. I found the compare function of
cmsmatrix.org
very helpful We compared drupal, plone, and joomla. Decided on plone.

I don't have any direct experience with Plone/Zope, but recently went through
the process of deciding on a CMS for a project and came across some good
discussion on the topic:

Without having installed Plone, my impression is that it extremely scalable and
more polished than most systems with some advanced functionality, but that there
is quite a learning curve.
I went with Drupal for my project because of their emphasis on
community-building- if the research/knowledge base is going to be setup as a
community, I would recommend considering Drupal. It may be able to get the job
done with a lot let effort. I'm sure language would be a consideration as well
(python vs PHP).

We recently launched a new site called Mormon Testimonies (http://
www.mormontestimonies.org/) where members can write or embed YouTube
videos of their testimonies. It runs on Mediawiki which seemed like a
good choice because it's relatively easy to use. On the other hand,
it's not THAT easy to use, and for testimonies, collaboration and a
history of revisions aren't important. We specifically don't want
anyone to edit anyone else's testimony. Should I look for or develop
a Mediawiki plugin to lock it down? Or I should switch to some other
software package that's more suited for this? (Everyone gets their
own page and that's it -- a bit like MySpace.)
