We could use Klix (Borland/Inprise Delphi) which will soon include Borland
C builder as well for cross platform Linux/Windows development. It would
be big and most likely depend on X. But it is a start and can be used to
prototype a standard that can then be used to for a shell script or
something, or even gcc if we can convert the output of the C Builder work.

I am sure that any remote configuration would be via ssh anyway. If we do
it via a web server on the gateway, then it would be ssl.

I agree. And while I do not mind the command line, it is often nice to
have a well crafted tool or interface help you and also reduce the chance
of errors.
