Use either a regular cable to a regular port on the hub or a cross-over
cable to the uplink port on the hub. The uplink port is wired in the
cross-over cable configuration, so it would replace the need for a
cross-over cable when cascading hubs/switches.

Sounds like the configuration of the desktop computer isn't right to me.
