It is a CF/ Disk on Chip (magicram) that I had in mind. I have also
checked out IDE PC Card drives and they cost approx $80-$100 and seem a
good option. Here again write-protect is an issue.

I was thinking I'd make partions for /var/log and /tmp which require
write permissions and make the others ro. Any ideas?

Hi there,

I'm a newbie myself and I would like to ask a question of you, Mohan.
Could you tell me what kind of device you mean by "a flash 8MB IDE
module" (perhaps a URL to such a device?) Do you mean something
different than Compact Flash to IDE?

I've searched around with google and also the LEAF mailing list archives
(on the terms "compact flash" and also "write protect") and pretty much
found that CF or an associated IDE adapter cannot be write-protected. I
e-mailed acscontrol.com asking this and they responded "It does not have
write protection. The card is accessed as an IDE device, and if the
write enable is disabled, the cards IDE registers cannot be read." I
asked them to compare their product with:
  http://www.hscjpn.co.jp/english/industrial/3-5cf_slot.htm
which offers a jumper for write-protection. They responded "they are
not using the CF card as a hard drive(IDE), they are using it as an
ATAPI device, which can be read only, but only on later bios can be
booted from."

I did find a Smart Media (which can be write-protected) to IDE adapter
at:
  http://www.mesanet.com/diskcardinfo.html
but it's a LOT more expensive than CF to IDE.

If the device you had in mind is different from CF, I'd really liked to
know about it.

Thanks a lot!
