Hm, I've Googled around and I'm beginning to think that my ISP is just slow starting up PPP on their end. When I run the connect script manually with minicom the ISP sends a text line (after accepting my password) that says it is starting PPP but the obvious PPP "garbage" characters don't show up. Maybe I just need to wait longer (a lot longer) for PPP on their end to start. I will give that a try and report back. Thanks, Philip Using Tomcat but need to do more?
