I've been using ledger-mode with ledger for 7 years or so. I do a lot of manual entry from paper receipts so I'm often entering dates that are not today's date.
I use the "Y 2017" command and usually just enter my dates as "8/1" or whatever. However a recent change to ledger-mode has made it only recognize dates with years. I'd rather be lazy, but OK, this isn't the first tool that works better with full dates.
