Ridsdale was undoubtedly right as you say but he wasn't right about everything. He couldn't have foreseen the temporary collapse in the transfer market for example. That was the flaw in his plan. So long as players were kept on sufficiently long contracts (hence the constant renegotiations) and as long as they were not reaching the end of their careers, then the outlay on signing them could always be recouped - so the debt was manageable from that point of view. He also failed to keep an eye on other expenditure. In much the same way - not everything that Ken Bates does is wrong.
