Well, similar to the last home game v Coventry this was 2points thrown away by
awful defending in a match that we should have won.A Sunday lunchtime kick off
does no one any favours - and this was reflected in the poor crowd and the even
worse atmosphere we generated. For my own part the normal hour long train
journey took nearly two hours and included a replacement bus - not the best way
of getting in the mood for it all.Last year v Cardiff I expected a stuffing and
we got one - this time I thought we ought to win and I was right we should have
done.We started brightly but it took a great save from Rachubka to stop us
going one down. We then had a couple of half chances including one from a
corner, and then with 15mins gone - we gifted them a goal - how many times have
we said that this season and how many more times before we defend properly ?A
ball over the top, and O'Dea was in between the forward and the  ball - simple
basic defending - he could
have shepherded it out or gone for proper safety and hoofed it behind -
instead he made a total hash of it , miskicked it and stumbled (replays on the
big screen did seem to show he got a bit of a nudge but even so...) and the
forward nipped in and despite pressure from Lees and the keeper he scrambled it
home. An awful goal and one that is so typical of our season so far. From then
till half time we huffed and puffed a bit, but with both Howson and Clayton
being largely annonymous all our best chances came from set pieces - Snoddys
corners are now a dangerous weapon in our armoury. Second half we did a bit
better with the midfield taking control but they defended with confidence -
they held their shape and let us come on to them.Whenever we created a chance
their keeper, having the game of his season, was there to thwart us. Just as it
looked as if we might have thrown away all 3 points, a free kick was well met
by Lees and the ball ran to Snoddy who
scrambled it home from close range. Great almost 20mins to go, surely we would
go on and win it now ? Instead we seemed to lose our heads and all our
composure and all our passing and good play stopped. We still had time to
create a couple of half chances and long range efforts and we were on the end
of a few flag happy off side decisions but we never looked like a team who
wanted to go on and win and move up to 3rd place and so the game fizzled out
without us ever getting the rewards our possession deserved - it all may have
been different if Max were still here.So another 2 points wasted due to school
boy errors at the back and the general decline in atmosphere and commitment
among the crowd continues apace. There really is a general malaise now amongst
fans and it is hard to see how it will end - even a brief appearance at half
time by Wilko and his Championship winning team did little to raise the moodAll
in all a disappointing day
Dave
